Decision tree
- Can you see the bottom clearly? If no, keep people out.
- Is flow normal? If no, clean the strainer/filter, check valves and hoses, and troubleshoot the pump before chemistry.
- Are test results credible? Confirm the kit is compatible, in date, and used correctly.
- Is there slime, bodily-fluid contamination, or unknown mixing? Drain and clean.
- Is the system within its documented recovery procedure? Follow it exactly, circulate, and retest.
- Does the problem return? Look for hidden biofilm, a dirty cover, undersized filtration, sunlight, or unrealistic water-change intervals.
Why adding more sanitizer can fail
If the filter is clogged or the pump is not moving water, treatment will not distribute properly. If contamination is heavy, measured demand may remain high. If the reading is wrong, another dose can overshoot. Fix physical flow and measurement first.

Troubleshoot in the right order
Physical problems should be checked before chemical guesses. Confirm the pump is moving water, then inspect the strainer and filter, then verify the test method, and only then make a measured treatment correction. This order prevents a large dose from being added to stagnant or poorly mixed water.
Cloudy water
Cloudiness may be suspended debris, fine air bubbles, a loaded filter, precipitated minerals, high organic load, or growth. Fill a clear glass and let it stand. Bubbles that disappear point toward aeration or an air leak; settled particles suggest filtration or precipitation. This observation does not prove safety, but it helps separate causes.
Odor
Check the tub, cover underside, filter housing, drain area, and nearby floor. The source may be stagnant water outside the main vessel. Never lean over concentrated chemicals or use smell to judge dose. Ventilate and follow the product’s safety instructions.
Foam
Persistent foam often follows detergent, cosmetics, oils, or a rising dissolved load. Skimming and filtration may not remove dissolved surfactants effectively. Prevent recurrence with pre-entry showers, fully rinsed swimwear, and dedicated cleaning tools. A complete water change is often more reliable than a chain of defoaming products.
Green or colored water
Green can indicate biological growth, but dissolved metals may also change color after oxidation. Slippery surfaces, poor treatment history, sunlight, and low flow increase concern for growth. Clear but tinted water after a chemical addition can suggest metals. Stop use and identify the cause before selecting a treatment.
Escalate when
- The pump will not prime or electrical protection trips.
- Water quality returns within hours of a full clean.
- A chemical reaction produces gas, heat, splashing, or breathing irritation.
- The shell, plumbing, or heat exchanger may be corroding.
- A shared or commercial setting is subject to local health rules.
