Air-side maintenance
Dust and blocked clearance reduce heat rejection. With power disconnected, use only the cleaning method permitted for the coil and housing. Do not bend fins, flood electrical sections, or enclose the chiller where exhaust air recirculates.
Water-side maintenance
Keep the treatment chemistry within material limits, prevent debris entry, and restore flow as soon as restriction appears. Scale or corrosion inside a heat exchanger can reduce performance, but chemical descaling must be approved for the exchanger, pump, seals, hoses, and tub.
Baseline performance test
At stable conditions, record tub volume, ambient temperature, starting water temperature, target, cover use, and temperature change over time. Repeating the same test later helps distinguish seasonal heat gain from declining equipment performance.
Shutdown and freeze protection
Water trapped in plumbing can expand and crack components. Follow the exact drain, winterization, storage, and restart procedure for the model. Do not assume indoor storage drains every low point.

Monthly owner inspection
- Disconnect power and inspect the plug, cable, housing, and dry connection area.
- Check mounting, vibration pads, clearance, and exhaust path.
- Remove loose dust using the approved method.
- Inspect hoses, unions, valves, filter housing, and pump for staining or drips.
- Service the strainer and filter.

Condenser and ventilation
An air-cooled condenser needs clean fins and unrestricted air. Use only a soft brush, vacuum, or procedure allowed by the manual; bent fins and water in electrical sections can create new problems. Maintain clearance on every side specified by the manufacturer.
Water chemistry and the heat exchanger
Chiller heat exchangers may use titanium, stainless steel, or other materials, each with specified water limits. Hydrofarm identifies the exchanger material and pressure limit for its models. Keep the chosen sanitizer and pH within the complete system’s permitted range. Do not circulate an acid or descaler unless every wetted component supports it.

Outdoor and winter care
Use outdoors only when the model is rated for it. Hydrofarm’s outdoor model instructs owners to drain and disconnect during freezing weather, while other units are indoor-only. “Under a cover” does not change the product rating. Follow the exact rain, temperature, drainage, and storage requirements.
Annual or professional service
Seek qualified service for sealed refrigeration checks, damaged electrical parts, repeated protective trips, internal leaks, or performance loss that remains after flow and airflow maintenance. Preserve receipts, model data, and maintenance records for warranty support.

Maintenance mistakes that shorten life
- Operating with a dirty cartridge until the chiller alarms or freezes.
- Placing the unit against a wall or inside an unventilated cabinet.
- Allowing sprinklers, roof runoff, or condensation to reach an indoor-only unit.
- Using unapproved descaler or sanitizer against the exchanger.
- Leaving water trapped during freezing weather.
- Ignoring small union leaks and corrosion staining.
Post-maintenance test
After service, run circulation first, vent air, inspect under flow, and only then enable cooling. Record the starting temperature and verify a stable trend. Check the floor and fittings again after the system reaches target because temperature change can expose a marginal seal.
Maintenance after a long idle period
Inspect for pests, corrosion, cracked hoses, stuck valves, stale water, damaged wiring, and blocked vents before power is restored. Drain and clean the wet system, replace questionable filter media, confirm freeze damage did not occur, refill, purge, leak-test under circulation, and only then enable cooling.
Consumables and spares
Keep the exact filter cartridge, approved O-rings, fuses only when user-serviceable, hose washers, and treatment test supplies identified by the manuals. Record part numbers. Improvised seals, random lubricants, and look-alike filters can create leaks or restriction.
Keep dated records so gradual performance changes are easier to identify.
