The four-part maintenance system
- Source control: shower first, cover the tub, remove debris, and keep footwear out.
- Circulation and filtration: confirm strong return flow, clean the strainer, and service the filter before pressure or flow collapses.
- Water treatment: test the variables required by the chosen sanitizer and use only products approved for the tub materials.
- Cleaning and inspection: wipe the waterline, clean accessible surfaces, inspect hoses and fittings, and perform periodic drain-and-clean service.

When to drain instead of treating
Drain and clean when contamination is obvious, biofilm or slime is present, an accidental fecal or vomit event occurs, incompatible chemicals were mixed, or water remains cloudy or foul after filtration and correctly measured treatment. Chemical additions cannot remove every dissolved contaminant, and guessing creates new risks.
Record what works
Keep a short log of use count, test results, filter service, water changes, and unusual symptoms. A log reveals whether the true driver is bather load, a dirty filter, sunlight, under-circulation, or treatment inconsistency.

Maintenance by component
Tub and cover
The waterline collects sunscreen, skin oil, detergent and airborne dust. Wipe it before the film becomes a persistent ring. Clean both sides of the cover, inspect stitching or seals, and dry trapped moisture. A cover reduces debris and heat gain, but a dirty underside can re-contaminate freshly cleaned water.
Pump and strainer
Learn the normal sound and visible return flow. A pump that becomes louder, rattles, surges, or loses prime is giving diagnostic information. Shut it down if it is running dry. Clean the strainer and inspect the suction path before assuming the pump has failed.
Filter
Service filters by flow and condition as well as time. Heavy use, lotion, fine debris and outdoor exposure can load a cartridge quickly. Keep a correct spare. Never solve low flow by operating without filtration unless the equipment manufacturer specifically directs a brief diagnostic test.
Chiller
Keep air intakes and exhausts clear, provide the specified clearance, and prevent hot discharge air from recirculating into the intake. Check that water flow remains within the chiller’s range. Scale, blocked airflow, dirty heat-exchange surfaces, and low flow can all increase runtime.
Example: build a schedule from real use
Consider a 100-gallon covered tub used by one showered person five times weekly. Start with a pre-use visual and flow check, treatment testing at the system’s recommended frequency, weekly filter inspection, and a recorded drain-and-clean interval. If a second user begins daily sessions, do not simply keep the old calendar. Increase testing, watch filter loading, and shorten the water-change interval until measurements and appearance remain stable.

- Adding treatment before confirming the real water volume.
- Using water clarity as proof that treatment is controlled.
- Cleaning only the tub while leaving the cover, filter, and plumbing dirty.
- Changing several variables at once, making the true fix impossible to identify.
